INTRO TO XR DANCE

Learn from Brandon Powers and the Maitree team on ways you can transition into the XR world as well as what to consider from both practical and creative standpoints. In this session, participants will be introduced to the fascinating world of Extended Reality, encompassing Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). We will discuss the differences and how each technology can be used to translate dance into the XR world and inform your devising and choreographic process.

Moving from the physical to the digital can be intimidating for dancers and choreographers. This session is to ease your nerves and to provide some insight into the processes, challenges, and perks of XR dance as well as the possibilities. We will also look into case studies of projects around the world that have discovered the beauty of XR dance.

PLAY & EXPERIENCE XR

The best way to grasp XR concepts is to get your hands on the tech and immerse yourself in alternate realities. This session will be facilitated in a rotational format with the intention of allowing participants to understand the wide range of possibilities within the form. In the session there are three XR Experience Stations groups will rotate through. These focus on:

1)Virtual and augmented reality experiences

2) 360 and 180 Filming demonstration and examples

3) Volumetric Capture and experiences

Delving into the intersection technology and dance, we will explore how XR is reshaping the way artists and audiences engage with performances. From virtual stages to immersive storytelling, we will witness the evolution of dance through XR lenses.

EMBODIMENT DESIGN IN XR

Facilitated by Brandon Powers, this interactive session explores Brandon's Embodiment Design methodology, introducing participants to the potential for using choreographic language to design interactive XR experiences. By utilizing choreographic principles and user experience concepts, Embodiment Design asks creators to think from the inside-out, first designing how we want our participants to feel, and then building the interactions and gestures around those choices.

Workshop participants will explore this methodology and then break into groups to begin to design the groundwork for their own XR experiences.

XR COLLAB & BUSINESS

This session supports participants understand the collaborative and business side of dance performance and XR related work by stepping through the producing workflow from the full team dancers need to collaborate with to produce work, the technology needed, budgeting and timeframes.

We explore how XR can elevate dance performances and attract diverse audiences, transforming traditional dance shows into multilayered experiences; how XR can transform collaborative workflows to produce work remotely and  unravel the emerging business models and monetization strategies for XR dance productions - from local to international funding sources. From ticketed virtual shows to partnerships with tech companies, this section will encourage participants to explore new avenues for financial sustainability.

MOTION CAPTURE WORKSHOP

A creative and technical workshop diving into the wonders of Motion Capture and dance. This interactive session focuses on live streaming Motion Capture, an Audio Visual approach to performance that is becoming increasingly popular and allows remote collaborations. From understanding motion capture fundamentals to designing choreography tailored for the technology, participants will have the opportunity to choreograph their own work in a motion capture suit and witness the transformation of their movements into digital realms and bodies.

By encouraging participants to explore different virtual environments, with choices of avatar body types, elements and effects, they can start to form a new understanding of the shape and reality shifting possibilities of dance and XR.

XR CREATIVE BRAINSTORMING

Throughout the 2-day workshop, participants will  work in groups to devise an initial framework for their own dance XR work for personal or company production. They will be encouraged to consider the many types of XR tech available to them, which technology may work best to support the work or story they want to devise and start mapping out the work from world-building and considering the audience perspective, to interactivity and choreography.

At the end of the workshop, groups can share their ideas and receive feedback from facilitators.
